A 2ZR-FE Dual vvti

Another fitted Corolla swap would be a 2ZR-FE from a newer Corolla model. The 2ZR-FE 1.8L (1797cc) was an all aluminum piston motor from Toyota’s ZR power train. The 2ZR-FE was an undersquared i4 DOHC economic motor. The 2ZR-FE featured Dual vvt-i. Production for the 2ZR-FE begin in 2007. The bore of the engine was 80.5 mm and had a stroke of 88.3 mm. Power from the 2ZR-FE were anywhere between 126-140PS with up to 128 ft•lb of torque at different rpm settings. The 2ZR-FE had a compassion ratio of 10.0:1. As of now, the 2ZR-FE is the successor of the 1ZZ-FE. There were JDM versions of the 2ZR-FE with some having different appearances.

Like the 1ZZ-FE, the 2ZR-FE was never designed to handle forced induction. Now that the engine is being tested, there’s been several cases were a slightly modified 2ZR-FE was able to handle well over 200PS. But for long term reliability the motor is good for 190PS. Most modern Corolla engines in the 1.8L category will handle anywhere between 170-190HP.

Aftermarket for force induction is large. There are high quality custom parts for a 2ZR-FE build at the Monkey Wrench Racing website. There are customed or blot turbo kits for the 2ZR-FE at turbokits.com. Craigslist, Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ebay have other "quality" parts. Rotrex has a C Series of superchargers that will work well on a 2ZR-FE.

A 1ZZ-FE With vvti

The perfect engine swap for any fitted Toyota Corolla would be a nice 1ZZ-FE out of an 03+ Toyota Corolla. The 1ZZ-FE was a 1.8L (1794cc) all-aluminum block piston motor from Toyota’s ZZ power train. The 1ZZ-FE was an i4 economic undersquared DOHC motor. There were 5 versions of this motor.  Updated versions after the year 2000, had vvti and other minor updates. The 1ZZ-FE was produced from 1980-2007. The bore of the engine was 79 mm and its stroke was 91.5 mm. Power were rated anywhere at 120-145hp with up to 127 ft•lbs of torque at a given rpm. Higher power ratings depends on the version of that motor. The 1ZZ-FE had a compassion ratio of 10.0:1. The motor was designed to improve fuel efficiency. There were JDM versions of this motor with different appearances. Some parts from the ZZ Series are interchangeable with one another.

A perfect tune can change the nature of this engine. A tuned 1ZZ-FE has potential over stock. The motor can handle a turbo or a supercharger pretty well. The 03+ vvti versions of a slightly modified 1ZZ-FE is said to produce well over 200PS. Reliability plays an important role in this application. Your best bet is to settle with 175-190PS for the vvti versions and 170PS for the non vvti versions. 

Aftermarket for this motor is very strong. The 1ZZ-FE can be rebuilt for force induction or for NA applications. Car enthusiasts usually find customed or blot parts at MWR(MonkeyWrenchRacing) or turbokits.com. Some Kseries mods, such as custom manfolds, can be customed fitted with the 1ZZ-FE motor.

A 1ZZ-FE vvti TRD Supercharger Kit


The 1ZZ-FE had a TRD Supercharger Kit option for the 2003-2004 9th Gen Corollas, 1st Gen Pontiac Vibe, and Matrix. Power can be made anywhere from 160-170hp with up to 145+lbs of torque. Other electronics and engine mods can increase power from 166-180PS.

A customed Rotrex, Eaton, or SC14 supercharger kit can be used to produce more power. At this point, people usually rebuild their engines for more power and reliability.

The TRD 1ZZ-FE supercharger is a complete blot-on. The supercharger can also be refitted or made to run on any 03+ 1ZZ-FE vvti. This supercharger can also be refitted with the 1ZZ-FED engine as well. The 1ZZ-FED engine can be found in the MR2 Spyder and Celica Gt. Many swapped oldschool Toyota Corollas such as the 8th Gen Corolla, would need a custom hood.

4A-GZE Motor

Drop a 4A-GZE into your fitted Toyota Corolla. The 4A-GZE was a 1.6L(1587cc) top mounted supercharged engine. The engine was an oversquared aluminum/iron block piston, force inducted motor. The engine was equipped with a roots type supercharger. This motor came from Toyota’s A power train. The 4A-GZE was produced from 1980- 1995. The 4A-GZE was an i4 DOHC motor. The bore of this engine was 81 mm and the stroke was 77 mm. The 4A-GZE had an output anywhere between 145-170hp at a given rpm and with up to 155lbs of torque. The motor had compassion ratios between 8.5:1 -8.9:1. There were JDM versions of the 4A-GZE.

The 4A-GZE is mostly forged.  Car enthusiasts would convert the 4A-GZE into a turbo or a Rotrex supercharged motor. The turbo conversion alone is also known as a 4A-GTE. Aftermarket for the 4A-GZE is quite large. The motor can be modified to handle up to 270PS on stock internals.

A 4E-FTE Motor

Swap in a 4E-FTE into your Toyota Corolla. The 4E-FTE was an undersquare 1.3L(1,331cc) aluminum/iron block piston motor from Toyota’s E power train. The 4E-FTE was also an i4 force inducted turbo engine. The engine was produced from 1985- 1999. The bore of this engine was 74mm and had a stroke of 77.4mm. The 4E-FTE had an output of 133hp with up to 116 ft•lb of torque at a given rpm. The motor had compassion ratios anywhere between 8.5:1 -9.5:1. The 4E-FTE was designed to improve performance and fuel efficiency. There were only JDM versions of the 4E-FTE with several fitted designs.

The aftermarket is large for the 4E-FTE. Many stronger parts as well as blocks can be found via internet. With a perfect tune/mods, the 4E-FTE can make decent gains over stock. With mods, the motor is good for up to 175PS on stock internals.

A 1NZ-FE With vvti

Go with a 1NZ-FE in your Toyota Corolla. The 1NZ-FE was an undersquared 1.5L (1497cc) i4 DOHC engine. The motor was an all-aluminium block economic piston motor. The 1NZ-FE came from Toyota’s NZ power train. The engine was produced in the earlier 2000s. The bore of this engine was 75 mm and the stroke was 84.7 mm. The 1NZ-FE has an output of 107hp with 91-103lbs of torque at a given rpm. The engine has a compassion ratio of 10.5:1. The engine is very light and uses a special cam phased profile called vvti. The 1NZ-FE is based off the 1NZ-FXE. There were JDM versions of the 1NZ-FE.

Like the 1ZZ-FE/2ZR-FE, the 1NZ-FE was never designed for performance. But this motor has a lot of potential.  With NA or Force induction, the motor can be tuned to produce up to 145PS. Many car enthusiasts have use this motor in many of their performance applications.

Aftermarket for the 1NZ-FE is plentiful for NA builds. The 1NZ-FE have a lot of performance pros. The motor is very light, compacted, and has a lot of room for extra work. NA build applications are best fitted into lighter chassises. A featured Blitz Supercharger have been made available for this motor.

The 1NZ-FE has a lot custom or selective force induction aftermarket kits. Some are even bolt on and parts from the Toyota A/ZZ or NZ Series are exchangeable. A 1NZ-FE can be modified to make big power with force induction.

A 4th Gen 3S-GTE

The 3S-GTE was a squared 2.0(1,998cc) aluminum/iron block piston motor from Toyota’s S power train. The 3S-GTE was an i4 forced inducted turbo engine. There were 5 versions of this motor.  The engines were produced from in 1980- 2007. The bore of the engines were 86 mm and had a stroke of 86 mm. A 3S-GTE output were anywhere between 165-256hp with up to 239 ft•lb of torque at a given rpm. The 3S-GTE had a compassion ratios anywhere between 8.5:1 -9.0:1. Later versions had minor updates and appearances. The 3S-GTE was designed to improve performance and fuel efficiency. There were JDM versions of the 3S-GTE with a different fitted design. 5S-FE parts are interchangeable with these series of motors.

Aftermarket for the 3S-GTE is pretty large via internet. The 3S-GTE engine is popular with the Toyota MR2 and Celica. There are custom turbo kits and parts for the 3S-GTE.  Modified force inducted 3S-GTE , are known to make serious power. A built 3S-GTE can handle well over 1000+hp. A lighty modified and tuned 3S-GTE can still produce up to 300PS. Any power from a 3S-GTE is ridiculous for cars like the Toyota Corolla.

A 5S-FE With Cali Emissions

Swap in a 5S-FE into your Toyota Corolla. The 5S-FE can be found in a Toyota Camry, Solara, or MR2. The 5S-FE was an undersquare 2.2(2,164cc) aluminum/iron block piston motor from Toyota’s S power train. The 5S-FE was also an eco friendly motor. The engine was produced from 1990- 2007. The bore of this engine was 87.1mm with a stroke of 90.9mm. The 5S-FE had an output of 136hp with up to 150 ft•lb of torque at a given rpm. The motor had a compassion ratio of 9.5:1. The 5S-FE was designed to improve fuel efficiency. There were JDM versions of the 5S-FE with several updates and fitted designs.


A JDM CT26 Turbocharger For The 3S-GTE 

Aftermarket is plainful with this motor as a top potential builder. The 5S-FE can be tuned with a 3S-GTE turbo kit and an aftermarket piggyback system. The motor is good for 180PS with bags of given torque. The 5S-FE can also be rebuilt for forced induction and parts are easily exchangeable with many 3S-GTE engines. The engine will handle much more power with a customed turbo or a Rotrex supercharger kit. 

Engines such as the 3S-GTE are not average swaps. Everything is different including electronics/ECU. All the proper equipment from the donated car including a suitable or modified transmission is needed for a successful swap. These swaps requires a lot of customization including customed motor mounts, suspension, custumed high proformance axles, shifter, fuel system, cooling system, A/C/power steering, intake/exhaust, suspension/brakes, and tires. A chassis conversion can be added. The following swaps listed above has been done to many versions of the Toyota Corolla, Celica, Tercel, MR2, and Camry. 

Aftermarket for these engines is quite large. Turbo or supercharged applications may require upgraded injectors, upgraded ECU, a blot on or customed built manfold, fuel pump, and boost controller. Every motor and transmission has a weakness. It is very important to address your motor and transmission for weaknesses before modifying them.
